Where Voip has certain features which need no authorization for their functioning, features like E911 and Voip phone for emergency calling is one feature which needs such permission to function. Owing to this, Voip phone service has been banned in many countries or isn’t used or talked about in public.
The ability to connect to emergency services using Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP phones is a grave issue and has been a considerable point of conciliation taken place between providers and 911 networks. But, since then U.S. Senate has passed the legislation that the operators of 911 networks should open doors completely for VoIP providers.
Legislation for New and Emerging Technologies 911 Improvement Act was passed by common consent so that the Voip phone system providers can also give the benefit to their customers of being able to make emergency calls and calls to 911 in times of crises.
The US legislation for allowing 911 emergency calls also demands 911 networks that when they are reached by VoIP phone calls, they should charge same rates and apply same conditions they put when someone dials from a mobile phone or a traditional phone.
This act by the American Senate was appreciated by many Voip providers and customers. Dialing 911 emergency service using Internet phones has given ease to many Voip users and thus, can be considered as one of the most helpful features of the Internet world.
VoIP providers in the U.S. offer E911 service to more than 95% of Voip users. E911 service provides pass all the necessary information, including name and address to the nearest 911 dispatch centers.
E911 or enhanced 911, is a technology that has been created to give traditional landline telephones the very facility to be able to send out critical location data rapidly and transparently, in addition to providing precise emergency-calling abilities to internet-telephony devices such as VoIP phones. This technology automatically transfers calls from Voip users to the nearest PSAP (public-safety answering point). Consequently, the emergency-service dispatch centers then respond to 911 calls and send help right away.
Ever since, Voip phone systems and internet telephony has gained momentum within the market, the need for E911 technology became essential. Mobile-phone user, for example, can be located virtually anywhere, not knowing the exact location of the subject. Thus, this makes unfeasible for a service provider to be able to determine the precise location of the nearest and most appropriate PSAP. VoIP subscribers, then again, often use phone numbers which have been assigned to locations many miles away from their actual physical presences. This too often makes it impossible for service providers to be able to provide a suitable PSAP connection.
But, with Voip E911 facility at hand, this has always been sorted out and thanks to US Government’s step, we can rightly say that this facility now has the potential to be able to enhance even further and rapidly meet the emergency needs of every Voip user.
